Chapter Eight

The night sky was littered with an endless array of stars. Not a single one of them caught Crowley's attention, as focused on Josephine's eyes as he was.

There was a certain fire to them as she retold moments from her life before the dog apocalypse and Crowley just couldn't look away. He had always been a man of few words. It was his nature, and for this reason, he was attracted to people who loved to talk and was quite content to listen to her, a smile playing on his lips.

Apparently, years before everything went to hell and before her parents' accident, she lived with them and occasionally her grandfather whenever he could visit. Both parents were heavily interested in her choice of career path. Her father, also a military man but retired early by an injury, had wanted her to join the army to continue the family tradition as he had no son. Her mother, more traditional, had simply wanted her to get married.

Her grandfather had surprisingly been neutral about the entire issue, encouraging her to do what she wanted, but he had insisted on paying for her to take self-defense classes.

Ultimately, despite pressure from both parents, she chose to study psychology. They had died before she graduated. This led to her having somewhat of a breakdown and when she came out the other end, she decided she could do more good teaching than counselling, which is how she ended up where she was.

Between them, the bottle of alcohol stood abandoned on the rail. Crowley was yet to need its company. Not with Josephine standing so close to him that he could smell the scent of her body spray, talking as the evening faded into the dark of night.

Eventually, she noticed that she was doing all the talking and stopped abruptly and she frowned.

"You haven't said a word in the past hour, have you?"

"You don't see me complaining. I'm quite content listening."

"Bullshit," she said and folded her arms. "Your turn then. I've told you a lot about myself. It's only fair that you do the same."

Crowley struggled with his words for a while.

"You have had a more interesting life,” he said finally. “Trust me. And you have a knack for storytelling."

She didn't seem to buy it.

"I talk too much, don't I?"

Crowley's lips curved upwards.

"You do."

Her mouth fell open in shock. Like most people new to his personality, she was taken aback by his directness.

"Bitch!"

Crowley's eyebrow shot up in surprise, then he burst out laughing.

His laughter only managed to offend her further and she punched him lightly in the chest.

"Okay, come on now," Crowley laughed. "Stop that. You'll only hurt yourself."

Her mouth dropped opened and she swung at him again, this time with real force to prove a point, but he caught her by the wrist. She repeated the action with her other hand, and he seized that hand too.

"Well, that might have hurt me," Crowley admitted thoughtfully.

"It was intended to."

"Good form too."

"Thank you,” she said sharply.

"You don’t take teasing very well, do you?"

"No," she admitted, practically burying her face in his chest.
